Akin Outfitters has been in business for over 20 years which offers the best in quality hunting for clients each year. There are two types of hunts offered on private ranches in New Mexico, one which consists of Unit 4 with a high success rate and the other a trophy hunt in the Gila. We will use 4-wheel-drive vehicles in most of our hunting areas along with foot power. We hunt hard, resulting in a high shooting success over the years. You can depend on a rewarding hunt. NO DRAWING FOR TAGS. We are issued landowner forms each year and you submit that form with license payment to purchase a tag. |

Unit 4 - Rifle and Bow Hunts The ranches are located in the San Juan Mountains, the heart of elk country. The elevation is 7,500 feet to 10,000 feet with pines and open meadows. We kill good quality bulls every year due to great populations of elk in Unit 4. The rifle hunts have been around 70 percent or better success rate since offered. In 2008, with bows, we maintained our 100% shooting success with 3 bulls killed. In 2009, with bows, eight out of 10 hunters had shots at bulls, with a 300" bull taken. In 2010 we had 6 hunters with 100% shooting success, and 2 bulls taken. The land owners receive a limited number of elk tags from the New Mexico Game & Fish Department. THERE ARE NO LICENSE DRAWINGS, so you are guaranteed a license at a cost of $575.00. This is quality elk hunting during the rut in October and in November during the migration. If you are looking for that trophy bull, we can offer a high chance of success. There were 12 bulls taken by 18 hunters in 2007. In 2008 14 bulls were taken by 18 hunters, and in 2009 there were 16 bulls taken by 19 hunters. In 2010 we had 15 bulls taken out of 19 hunters. In 2011 we harvested 17 out of 20 bulls. We average around 70% or better kill every year. |

Unit 4 Rifle Hunts There are six 5-day elk rifle hunts, beginning October to mid-December with a limited number of openings. A 50 percent deposit is required upon booking with the balance, in the form of a certified check or money order, due upon arrival. We will furnish a list of items to bring upon booking. Plan to arrive in New Mexico the day before your hunt begins and sight your rifle in for 200 yards before you arrive. Please let us know of any physical limitations to ensure a safe and enjoyable hunt. New Mexico produces the highest success of trophy class bull elk! No drawing for tags! Unit 4 Bow Hunts Our bow hunts in Unit 4 are 6-day hunts which begin September 1st and run through September 22nd. The method of hunting is ambush and cow talk along with bugling. We hunt each morning and each evening of the 6-day hunt. The middle of the day is hot and we don’t go in the elk bedding grounds so we relax and head back out for the evenings and hunt them when they come of the bedding grounds. The bow hunts are guided 2 hunters per 1 guide. We expect only experienced bow hunters that take the time to become good shots to hunt the quality bulls of New Mexico. |
